I associate road trips with all the snacks, truck stops, and good music, but most of all… snacks. Eating all day is definitely one of my favorite pastimes, which is why snacks on deck are key to a happy Mela 🙂
I wonder how many times I’ll say the word “snack” in this post… new drinking game? Lol, bare with me people.
This past weekend I took a seven hour road trip to Atlanta from Radford with my fraternity brothers and as you can already imagine, there was a lot of fast food involved.
Being the person I am, the kind that despises McDonalds, I knew I had to bring along snacks, at least for the ride there. I know I’m on “vacation” and I should “splurge”, but personally, I’d rather put my health in jeopardy over something that would actually make my tastebuds happy, like some buttermilk biscuits and quality fried chicken. But that’s just me.
I definitely try to pick things that have minimal trash and take little effort to pack… simply in a ziplock or Tupperware. So here are my go-to snack pack treats!

Deli Meat
I’m not talking about Oscar Mayer or any of those pre-packaged meats in the refrigerated section (not hating, it’s just not what we’re going for here). Do yourself a favor, go to the deli section of your favorite grocery store and sample some of their best cold cuts. You won’t regret it. Then get a half-pound, or whatever of it and it’ll be your best friend. My current fav is Boar’s Head Blazin’ Buffalo. I usually just roll them up individually, cut them in half and store in a Tupperware with the veggies I mentioned below.
Fruits
For this particular trip, I packed strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes and bananas. Given that berries are definitely not in season right now, I would’t suggest this LOL, I felt like I was really craving them… but they just weren’t hitting the spot for that reason. None the less, they’re all pretty easy snacks to pack. I’d also suggest oranges or mandarins!
Veggies
Ah, the fun stuff. Amirite? Celery, broccoli, carrots and cucumbers are definitely the easiest for me and veggies that I actually enjoy eating plain. Definitely don’t force yourself to eat something you don’t like! If you need to, bring a lil sumn to dip it in like ranch or whateva.
Snack bar
Larabars are my grab & go must haves. I’m not a huge fan of protein bars because sometimes they taste so good, then I find my self 2-3 deep and I’ve practically OD’d on protein… just so unnecessary. So I usually stick to some type of granola bar or date-based bar like Larabars.
Chips
Finally, the king of all snacks. Chips! Duh. Salty + crunchy = perfection. Last weekend, I packed a ziplock filled with original goldfish, which lasted me like 2 days. I also love pork rinds & salt n vinegar chip, pack whatever floats your boat! 80% of my snack pack was definitely toward the healthier side, but if you’re able to splurge a lil… why not?
I hope this gave y’all ideas of what to bring on a road trip and how to keep some sort of a healthy balance!
